Hailed by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as “remarkably poised...sensitive and majestic," Laura Colgate was born in Memphis Tennessee and began playing the violin at the age of four. As a member of the Young Artist Program, she attended the Cleveland Institute of Music where she studied with David Updegraff. In 2006, she received her Bachelor’s Degree as a student of Lucy Chapman at the New England Conservatory (NEC). In 2007, she studied with David Takeno and Malin Broman in London and graduated as a Leverhulme Trust Recipient with her Masters’ Degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. While in London, Laura focused on the art of Classical Improvisation with David Dolan and performed a solo recital of improvised Mozart sonatas in the Barbican Centre, home of the London Symphony Orchestra. Laura returned to NEC in 2008 to study with Malcolm Lowe and received her Graduate Diploma. Throughout her education, she has gained extensive orchestral experience working under such worldrenowned conductors as Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach, Christopher Hogwood, Kent Nagano, Semyon Bychkov, James Levine, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, and Herbert Blomstedt. Her concert venues have included Japan, Russia, the Middle East, Mexico, much of Europe and the United States.
Laura has won numerous competitions, such as the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, for which she performed Vieuxtemp's Violin Concerto No. 4 in Severance Hall in 2001. After taking second place in NEC's Dorothy C. Baker Violin Competition in 2007 and first place in 2008, Laura was awarded the privilege of using a Joseph Filius Andreas Guarnerius violin (1715) for two years. In 2009, Laura won the Borromeo Quartet Guest Artist Award and subsequently performed with them in Jordan Hall in Boston.
As a soloist, Laura made her debut at the age of nine with the Corinth Symphony Orchestra and more recently, in November of 2008, she performed Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Germantown Symphony Orchestra. Laura was a member of Germany’s Schleswig Holstein Music Festival Orchestra in 2005 and 2006 where she studied with members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, she was a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra during their Autumn 2008 European Tour. As concertmaster, Laura has performed Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade" under Carlos Miguel Prieto during the 2004 Youth Orchestra of the Americas’ Summer Tour of Mexico. Also in the summer of 2005, she performed as concertmaster of the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Chamber Orchestra in Germany. In 2009, Laura served as acting concertmaster for Massachusetts’ Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. In 2010, Laura was proudly a member of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas‘ Carnegie Hall Concert for the World Economic Forum.
